South African heroine and struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela has died at the Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Monday aged 81 years. The sad news was confirmed by the Mandela family spokesman‚ Victor Dlamini‚ who said she died peacefully surrounded by her family and loved ones. She had been battling with a long illness and had been in and out of hospital since the beginning of the years.
Born in 1936 in Bizana in the Eastern Cape she met anti-apartheid activist and future president Nelson Mandela in 1957 in Johannesburg and got married a year later. Nelson was soon after jailed for 27 years but she kept his name alive and campaigned vigorously for the end of the apartheid regime.
She will be remembered as a fearless leader who was not afraid to speak her mind, and she is expected to be buried on the 14th of April.
