South African legendary jazz musician Hugh Masekela has passed away aged 78 after succumbing to prostate cancer. The Masekela family issued a statement saying that the jazz icon died surrounded by family and loved ones, and have described him as a loving and dedicated grandfather, father, brother and friend.
Masekela was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2008 and has been battling it since then. Affectionately known as “Bra Hugh” he had an illustrious career that spanned over 5 decades, gaining international recogniction with hits such as Soweto Blues, Bring Back Nelson Mandela just to mention a few.
He has performed alongside many greats that included Miriam Makeba, Fela Kuti, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.
